WINDOW MATERIALS

All Wood

For centuries windows have been made from wood. Now there are a multitude of wood species to choose from, each with different grain characteristics and weather resistance. Whether it will be painted or stained, a wood window is a beautiful option.

Clad

When a more maintenance free exterior is desired for a wood window, a layer of aluminum or vinyl “cladding” can be applied to the exterior of the window. The interior maintains the look and feel of a wood window allowing for the best of both worlds.

Vinyl

Typically the most cost effective option, vinyl windows have a low maintenance exterior with a finished interior. Today’s vinyl manufacturers are putting more and more of the features of wood windows into their product lines, making them a great option for many jobs.

Aluminum

Windows made entirely from aluminum have become very popular over the last few years, as the technologies have allowed some layout and design configurations. These have allowed contemporary residential architecture push to new levels, with large amounts of glass dominating facades of many homes.

FEATURES TO CONSIDER

Glass

While it may all seem clear, there are a number of different coatings and sciences that allow windows to meet a variety of energy and durability ratings. Modern windows typically have two layers of glass one on the interior, one on the exterior. The space between the two serves as an insulator and is often filled with argon gas for increased performance.

Grills

From a visual standpoint grills, or divided lights, are the most defining characteristic of a window, breaking the large piece of glass into individual panes. There are a variety of shapes available for grills applied to the outside of the glass (Simulated Divided Lights, or SDL) or in between the layers of glass (Grills between the Glass, or GBG). For a extra historic look, leaden grills can be done as well.

Wood Species

When selecting a wood window, there are a number of different species to choose from. When the window will be painted, economical types such as pine or fir are used. Mahogany, Oak or Knotty Alder, are popular choices for windows that will be clear coated or stained.

Finishes

To preserve a wood window, a finish must be applied. Wood windows can be ordered as raw wood, factory primed or factory painted/stained. Cladding is applied at the factory and finished in a number of colors.

Screens

Any opening window should have a screen to prevent bugs and other pests from getting in the home. Whether you want a traditional aluminum screen color matched to the window, one with a hinged wooden frame, or even that rolls up and down (like a garage door) there are many options. There are even various screen meshes to choose from allowing for different levels of visual clarity.

Hardware

All windows come with a variety of hardware finishes and other options. A simple white may blend the hardware into a white painted interior. Metals such as Satin Nickel, Polished Chrome, or Oil Rubbed Bronze can be a stunning contrast to a stained or painted window or they can be a wonderful complement when they match the interior door hinges and knobs.
